Out of the Frying Pan - First Six Panel Discussion - 24th September

@ 6.30pm, the Sherrard Room, Ashley Building, Middle Temple.

Join us for a Q&A with a number of recent tenants on the best way to survive and succeed in your first six. The event will be held under Chatham House rules and alcoholic (and non-alcoholic) beverages will be provided, so its a great opportunity to get a "warts and all" account of what to expect for the first six months. Don’t expect sympathy, but at least know they’ve been there before.

Applying for Pupillage? MTYBA wants to hear from you!

Last night MTYBA concluded its three-part Pupillage Application Programme with an event giving applicants an opportunity to have a go at some advocacy exercises in front of a mock pupillage panel, much like those seen at interview. Applicants were given a choice of a plea in mitigation or an application for summary judgment, a small amount of time to prepare, and delivered their application and received feedback.

As always, we're very grateful to the practitioners who take their time out to come and assist with these events.

We're always looking to adapt and expand the range of events and opportunities that we provide for our pre-pupils and help them through the process. With this in mind, MTYBA would like to invite our members to provide some feedback or input on aspects we can add or change to our programme.

Are some events more useful than others? Would you like to see them in a different format? Do they take place at the right time of year?

No idea is a bad idea so please let us know what you think by emailing us at enquiries@mtyba.org.

Best of luck to all of MTYBA's pupillage applicants!

Practice Makes Perfect for MTYBA's Pupillage Applicants

A group of MTYBA's pupillage hunters got a chance to hone their skills last night at our Pupillage Interview Workshop.

Appearing in front of panels of experienced interviewers from a variety of practice areas, our candidates undertook a short interview before receiving feedback and having an opportunity to ask questions of our panellists.

MTYBA would like to thank the practitioners who assisted on our interview panels and wish the very best of luck to all MTYBA members currently applying for pupillage.

Last night's event formed the second part of MTYBA's Pupillage Application Series. The final event, taking place on 4 June, is an Interview Advocacy Workshop. For details, click here or contact us at enquiries@mtyba.org.

MTYBA Goes On Circuit

On Monday 13th April, Karen Reid and Will Glover visited Middle Temple members in Cardiff at a Circuit Visit Conference.  Master Treasurer, Stephen Hockman QC, addressed those in attendance on the issue of what the Inn can do to better its assistance and support for those members on circuit.  Others raised issues around the problems faced by those recently called to the Bar with particular reference made to the financial plight of those at publicly funded sets and the difficulties faced by many in their pursuit of pupillage.

Karen Reid pointed to the series of events currently laid on by MTYBA in London to support its junior members and suggested that if there were eager contacts on circuit, and further resource from the Inn, MTYBA might be in a position to roll-out these events to benefit members based in other locations in England & Wales.

MTYBA Committee members will attend all of the circuit visits being conducted by Master Treasurer in the coming months.  The next event will be held in Newcastle on 28th May.  For further details, or if you would like to get involved in assisting with our work on circuit, please email enquiries@mtyba.org .
