Young Barristers' Committee Anglo-Dutch Exchange 2022
Our friends at the Young Barristers’ Committee is once again planning to host the Anglo-Dutch Exchange in collaboration with the Netherlands Bar from 4th-7th October. We are really keen that as many young barristers as possible sign up; it’s a great initiative which has been running for over 50 years. We hope to have a programme to share soon.
The Bar of England & Wales is, first and foremost, an internationalist, outward-looking profession. We have always believed that forging partnerships with Bar associations across the world and building on common beliefs and themes is a means of strength and solidarity with the profession at large. For many of us, it also means the opportunity to build our practices, and make new friends.
The Young Bar of England & Wales is no different – in fact, the need is even greater for junior practitioners who are hungry to develop their practices and make connections with their counterparts in Europe, the United States and beyond. The Anglo-Dutch Exchange offers such an opportunity.
This year's Exchange will be held from 4th to 7th October. For many years, the Young Barristers’ Committee and the Young Bar Associations of Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam, have organized this biennial event for young lawyers and we are very pleased to continue this great tradition between our jurisdictions.
If you need evidence of the Exchange’s popularity and success, you can rest assured in that it has been running in one form or another since 1966 – over 55 years.
The ADE usually comprises visits to prominent places of legal interest, and this year we hope to include a visit to the Netherlands Commercial Court (NCC) in Amsterdam so that young barristers can see its pioneering approach, including its cases heard in the English language. We also hope to include a visit to the Rijksmuseum, and the International Court of Justice and the Peace Palace in the Hague.
Legal seminars held within law firms are also a key feature of the week and the Young Barristers’ Committee is organising the Exchange in combination with members of leading law firms in the Netherlands, including: BarentsKrants, De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, Van Ardenne & Crince le Roy, Hoens & Souren Advocaten, and Ten Holter Noordam advocaten.
The Bar Council is asking for any barristers of seven years’ practice and under who are interested in taking part in the exchange to register their interest by emailing: YBC@barcouncil.org.uk.
