The outgoing 2018 Committee would like to thank all those who participated in the election, either by standing in the election or exercising their voting rights. There were many excellent nominees contesting the available positions and a very high voter turnout.

The incoming 2019 Committee would like to thank the outgoing committee for all their hard work throughout 2018.

MTYBA Elections 2018: Call for nominations

MTYBA will hold the AGM and Election of Officers from 6.30pm on Wednesday 5 December 2018 in Taskers, Middle Temple.
 
Deadline & how to stand: Send your full name, email address, Middle Temple membership number, year of Call, list of positions standing for (no more than 2), and a short biography (max 100 words) by email to the Returning Officer at 
mtybareturningofficer2018@gmail.com by 12pm (midday) on Thursday 22 November 2018.
 
Voting: Members will have the option to vote on the night in person, or by email up until midnight on Tuesday 4 December 2018.
Please DO NOT send your nominations or votes to this email address – they will not be counted.

  • Term of office: 2019 calendar year.

  • Eligibility: Any member of Middle Temple who has been called to the Bar and is within their first seven years of practice is automatically granted membership of MTYBA. Any member of MTYBA may stand and vote.

  • MTYBA members may also vote by email.

  • Candidates may stand for no more than two positions.

MTYBA's Intern Awards and Practice Development Grants Open for Application: Deadline 31 May

Pre-Pupil Members - Intern Awards

The 2018 Intern Awards open for applications on 1 May and will close at 5pm on Thursday 31 May.

There are up to three awards of £1000 available for pre-pupil members currently or due to undertake an international internship, in exchange for a short (1500 words) paper on a topic related to your experiences.

Tenant Members - Practice Development Grants

MTYBA is awarding two grants, of up to £500 each, for members of Middle Temple up to 7 years PQE. The grants are intended to assist our members in developing their practices and can be put towards attending conferences, international events, advocacy training or other training courses. If this money could help you do not hesitate to apply.

To apply, please reply to this email address setting out in no more than 500 words:
(a) your name, year of call and year of full qualification,
(b) what you would like to use a grant for; and
(c) how undertaking the activity would help to advance your practice

The deadline is 5pm on Thursday 31 May 2018.

Discounted tickets for MTYBA members to Middle Temple Annual Dinner, 17 May 2018

MTYBA has bought a limited number of tickets to the Inn's Annual Hall Dinner on 17 May 2018 which we are offering exclusively to MTYBA members at the discounted price of £20, down from the normal price of £45. Annual Dinner is one of the highlights of the Inn's calendar and this promises to be a great night with Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick confirmed as guest speaker. Mock Pupillage and Interview Advocacy

Registration remains open for Mock Pupillage Interviews and Interview Advocacy Pre-Pupillage events

Following on from the Application Evening, parts two and three of MTYBA's Pupillage Application Programme take the form of mock pupillage interviews and interview-style advocacy exercises.

1 March and 7 March, both from 18:30, Rutledge Suites, top floor of the Middle Temple Library.

Events:

Mock interviews 01/03: experienced interview panellists will provide first round-style interviews followed by feedback.

Interview Advocacy 07/03: an opportunity to have a go at an unseen interview advocacy exercise in front of a panel of experienced interviewers. Civil and criminal exercises will be available.

This event is open to MTYBA members. Please RSVP to enquiries@mtyba.org with your name, year of call and MT Membership number and which of either or both events you wish to attend. You will receive a confirmation email. We will send a further email confirming your time slot and requesting your application form a couple of days in advance of the event.

MTYBA Six Nations Socials

New for this year - MTYBA invites you to watch selected Six Nations rugby matches at Taskers. Free beer, soft drinks and snacks for those who arrive by kick-off. Otherwise BYOB.

MTYBA responds to the Bar Standards Board's consultation on Future Bar Training

Following the BSB's issuing of its consultation paper on 'Future Bar Training: Shaping the education and training requirements for prospective barristers', the 2017 MTYBA committee, in consultation with its membership, produced a response to the paper, which has recently been submitted to the BSB for consideration. The issues raised are central to the future training of young barristers, and include topics such as membership of an Inn, pupillage funding and pupil supervision.

The incoming 2018 Committee would like to thank the outgoing committee for all their hard work throughout 2017. Particular thanks go to the outgoing President Will Glover who has provided superb leadership over the past twelve months. Will has been heavily involved with MTYBA for several years and we are delighted that he will be taking up an ex-officio role on the Committee as past-President and pass on his substantial expertise. We also wish to acknowledge his predecessor Karen Reid, who stands down from the committee having served as past-President in 2017. Karen has been a brilliant servant of MTYBA over many years including two as President.

The 2018 Committee look forward to another year of working hard to represent the interests of Middle Temple’s young barrister members. Stay tuned for news of upcoming events and opportunities in the New Year.

Descriptions of Offices being contested:

President – To oversee the overall running of MTYBA, and to represent MTYBA within the Inn and at wider events along with the Vice President. You will be expected to sit on Middle Temple Committees in accordance with the Inn’s statutes and at the request of other members of the Inn, oversee all events (10 to 15 a year), think up and start new initiatives, take on new initiatives, be responsible for the MTYBA budget,  and represent MTYBA throughout the Inn. To stand for President you need to have served on the MTYBA committee for one year, or be proposed and seconded by two outgoing committee members. 

Vice-President – To support the President in the running of MTYBA and deputise for the President as required. It is the Vice President’s responsibility to ensure that the MTYBA constitution is being adhered to and to oversee any constitutional amendments.. The Vice President will take on some of the responsibilities of the President as agreed by the committee, including sitting on Inn committees and representing the interests of MTYBA’s members. 

Treasurer – To record all incoming and outgoings on behalf of MTYBA and assist with the budget preparation. The Treasurer is responsible for producing MTYBA’s accounts at the end of each year.

Secretary – The Secretary is responsible for organising MTYBA committee meetings, including room booking and preparation of the agenda, and for taking and circulating the minutes of those meetings.

Social Secretary – The Social Secretary will be responsible for organising several social events in the calendar year, liaising with, and in support of, other post-holders. The main social events in the MTYBA calendar on which the Social Secretary will lead are the Summer and Christmas Parties.

Communications Officer – The role involves three main parts.. First, controlling the email address and advertising all MTYBA events. Second, increasing the membership of MTYBA. Third, maintaining MTYBAs presence on social media.

Tenancy Officer – To provide support for and represent the interests of tenants in their first 7 years of practice. This officer is required to organise events which are of relevance to tenants (and the wider MTYBA membership), including social events and supplementary training, and take the lead on CPD/educational events. The Tenancy Officer also administers MTYBA's Practice Development Grant.

Employed Bar Representative – As well as being responsible for representing the interests of MTYBA’s employed members the employed bar rep position also aims to strengthen links with the self-employed bar and promote the profile of the employed bar within the junior end of the profession. This role should work closely with the Tenancy Officer to organise events of interest to those in practice. The role entails as a minimum organising one event a year for those who are at the employed bar and one to assist those who are seeking opportunities at the employed bar.

Pupillage Officer – To provide a link for pupils to MTYBA. This officer is required to organise MTYBA's two events per year for incoming first and second six pupils. They can also run additional events as and when they deem them to be appropriate, such as social events.

Pre-Pupillage Officer – The role of pre-pupillage officer is ideal for someone for whom the stresses and confusion of getting pupillage are still very fresh. Your responsibilities will include organising events to help people navigate the various stages of applying for pupillage, including paper applications, interviews, and relevant work experience. You will also lend a supportive ear to those with questions about the process, and need to keep your eye open for opportunities that may benefit them. As the competition for places increases, you will need to be able to support those who intend to continue applying and those who may consider looking at different careers. Primarily you will be required to organise MTYBA's three-part Pupillage Application Programme in the spring. The Pre-Pupillage officer is also responsible for administering MTYBA’s Intern Award. 

Advocacy Officer – Primarily the  role of this officer is to organise the Advocacy Competition which MTYBA runs in the Autumn each year. The officer should also look for opportunities to work with other committee members in order to provide advocacy training opportunities for MTYBA members at each stage of their career. 

Northern Circuit Chair - To Chair the Northern Sub-Committee of MTYBA. The Northern sub-committee members are nominated by the Chair at the start of the year and approved by the committee. The Northern Circuit Chair will take responsibility for organising events and opportunities for MTYBA members on the Northern Circuit, with the support of the subcommittee and the MTYBA committee, where necessary.

Development Officer - To assist in the development of strategy and new initiatives for the committee year and the longer term.
