MTYBA's Manchester Pupillage Day
MTYBA has recently set up a sub-committee with the aim of assisting members of the Inn who are based in the North of the country. Matthew Howarth leads this sub-committee, which is also made up of Lewis Bretts (Treasurer), Douglas Cochran (Pre-pupillage), Eleanor Keehan (Tenancy), Aisling Campbell (Social) and Kenneth Tang (Communications).
In achieving this aim, the Northern MTYBA sub-committee organised a mock-pupillage interview day on 11 March 2017 to assist young members of the Inn in their quest for pupillage. Manchester Metropolitan University kindly provided rooms for the day and those that attended were put through two rounds of pupillage interviews. The event was a success and those that attended found it very useful.
Thank you to those that attended and to those who helped to organise and run the event. Future events are planned so please look out for emails and social media posts for further information. If anybody wishes to obtain further details about MTYBA or the Northern sub-committee, please do not hesitate to get in touch. The Northern sub-committee’s email address is MTYBANorth@outlook.com.

"Confronting Modern Slavery": MTYBA and Human Rights Watch lecture, 1 February 2017
On Wednesday 1 February 2017, MTYBA and Human Rights Watch are collaborating to host an evening on the subject of Confronting Modern Slavery.
Despite the prohibition of slavery under article 4 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its abolition throughout the world, slavery continues to exist. The Walk Free Foundation's 2016 Global Slavery Index estimates that 45.8 million people are subjected to some form of modern day slavery.
The Human Rights Network (HRN) and MTYBA's event "Confronting Modern Slavery", will examine the prevalence of modern slavery, what form it takes (including domestic servitude, sex trafficking and forced labour) and what more needs to be done to tackle it.
For this event, HRN and MTYBA will be joined by a panel of four speakers with significant expertise in this area:
Caroline Haughey is a barrister at Furnival Chambers and prosecutes and defends across a wide range of the most serious and high profile criminal cases. She was instructed as counsel in the first Slavery case in Britain and has subsequently been instructed as leading counsel for the Crown in some of the most serious and high profile trafficking cases. Caroline was commissioned by the Prime Minister, in her previous role as Home Secretary, to carry out an independent review of the effectiveness of the criminal justice provisions in the Modern Slavery Act, one year after it came into effect. She has also been appointed to the Prime Minster's Modern Slavery Task Force, which is being chaired by the Prime Minister.
Lucy Colman works in the House of Lords as a Political Adviser and Speechwriter. Previously, she worked as a Researcher at the Centre for Social Justice, an independent think tank established to put social justice at the heart of British politics. There, she authored a report entitled ‘It Happens Here’, which exposed the hidden disgrace of modern slavery in the UK and made a number of key recommendations to tackle modern slavery in the UK. This was instrumental in placing modern slavery firmly on the political agenda, which later led to the passing of the Modern Slavery Act.
Justine Currell is the Executive Director at Unseen, a charity seeking to tackle modern slavery by supporting survivors, identifying the key issues surrounding slavery and exploitation, and influencing the systems that keep slavery hidden. In her capacity as Executive Director, Justine oversees Unseen’s modern slavery helpline and their wider engagement with stakeholders. Previously, Justine was the modern slavery senior policy adviser in the Home Office, where she led on the development of the Modern Slavery Act, including the transparency in supply chains provision and business guidance.
Rothna Begum is the women’s rights researcher for the Middle East and North Africa region at Human Rights Watch. Rothna has worked extensively on migrant domestic workers, many of whom have very few rights or protections and are vulnerable to abuse. Prior to joining Human Rights Watch, Rothna worked for Amnesty International.
Places are limited and you must register in advance to attend. Registration is free and can be completed through our Eventbrite page: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/confronting-modern-slavery-what-more-needs-to-be-done-to-tackle-modern-slavery-in-the-uk-and-around-tickets-30541429237
The event is being held in the Parliament Chamber at Middle Temple and starts promptly at 19:00.
The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception.
We look forward to seeing many of you there.

MTYBA Manchester Pupillage Day
On Saturday 4 June MTYBA hosted a Pupillage Day in Manchester, the first of its kind for MTYBA outside of London. Combining our three-part pupillage application programme into one single event we gave pupillage-seekers based in and around the northern circuit the chance to have their written applications scrutinised, undertake mock pupillage interviews, and perform advocacy exercises to our panels of local practitioners who then gave detailed feedback. One of our attendees gave the following feedback:
"I gained a lot from Saturday. I was given useful feedback on my pupillage application, great advice on how to approach a pupillage interview and gained good experience in conducting an advocacy exercise. I liked that the barristers cared about the advice they were giving and the fact that they were candid in their advice. Being given feedback from barristers on the Northern Circuit was a particular highlight. I am genuinely grateful for MTYBA’s effort in setting up the event."
Our sincere thanks go to Tim Storrie, Sam Karim and Doug Cochran for giving up their Saturday to assist us and impart their wisdom to our pupillage applicants. Thanks also go to Manchester Metropolitan University for hosting the event.
MTYBA wishes the very best of luck to those who attended on Saturday with the applications and to all our pupillage applicants across the country. If you have any ideas or suggestions as to how we can improve or pupillage application programme please do not hesitate to contact us at enquiries@mtyba.org.
MTYBA Advocacy Competition – Sponsored by Hammicks Legal
The final round of the MTYBA Advocacy Competition took place on Wednesday 13th April. Competitors progressed to the final through two rounds consisting of first, a bail application, and second, an application for strike out and summary judgment.
The final took the form of a mock criminal trial. This exercise required the competitors to produce opening and closing speeches. The trial also required examination in chief and cross examination of witnesses, in addition to fielding challenging judicial intervention.
The final was kindly judged by HHJ Edmunds QC and HHJ Gledhill QC. The following two individuals were named MTYBA Advocacy Competition Winners: Andrew Herd and Paul Smylie.
The winners each received £100 gift vouchers provided by Hammicks Legal.
We thank all those who judged and took part in the competition. Further details can be found on our advocacy page.
